The Graduate Management Admission Test also known as the GMAT is an English and a mathematics computer-adaptive standardized exam which measures the aptitude of academic success of a graduate business student. The exam is created to measure the skills one needs to be successful in the business world. Students takinga GMAT prep course should be made aware of the process and the different parts the exam contains. A student can receive a maximum score of 800.
The GMAT consists of eight parts and they are as follows: Analytical Writing Assessment section, Quantitative Section, Problem Solving, Data Sufficiency, Verbal Section, Sentence Correction, Critical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension.
The Analytical Writing Assessment is made up of two essays graded on a scale of 0 to 6 with 6 being the maximum grade to receive. In the first essay a student is required to analyze an argument and on the second a student is required to analyze an issue. It is highly important that students stick to the topic because if the essays are not written in the assigned topic they will be considered illegible.
The Quantitative Section is a multiple choice question exam part that consists of 37 questions and the students are given 75 minutes to answer them. Problem solving is also a multiple choice question exam that tests the arithmetic, elementary geometry and basic algebra skills of a student. Data Sufficiency provides a student with two separate statement that could answer questions, however, the student must determine if both statements are required or only both and even determine if there are enough facts provided in order to answer. Verbal Section is yet another multiple choice section that students are given 75 minutes to answer, but this section requires students to correct sentences, critical reasoning and reading comprehension. The highest one can score on the verbal part is 60 points.
Furthermore, Sentence Correction tests the proper English in which the exam provides possible answers that can be inserted in the blank parts of the written sentences. Critical Reasoning test the logical thinking of the test taker, which might ask to conclude an argument and present a brief statement. And finally, the Reading Comprehension provides passages and the exam will test the ability of comprehension by asking questions regarding the passages that were read.
Students should not become overwhelmed as they study for the exam. With multiple options available students can choose to personalize their gmat study process; prep courses are available which will assist the student with preparation. There are also self-study books and live online courses that will help students prep for gmat. One can register for the GMAT either by phone or internet and schedule an appointment with a designated test center.
